Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness

In 2026, the USA celebrates its 250th anniversary. The Declaration of Independence of July 4, 1776 marks the beginning of a nation founded on the principles of freedom, equality, and the pursuit of happiness.

The Amerikazentrum Hamburg is producing a special podcast for this historic anniversary: "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness: 250 Years of the Declaration of Independence" with experts from the USA and around the world.

Declaration of Independence

On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence is adopted and the USA is founded as an independent nation.

1787

Constitution

The Constitution of the United States is ratified – the oldest still-valid constitutional document in the world.

1861-1865

Civil War

The American Civil War leads to the abolition of slavery and the reunification of the nation.

1945

End of World War II

The USA becomes a leading world power and begins building the transatlantic partnership.

Civil Rights Movement

Martin Luther King Jr. delivers his famous "I Have a Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington.
