The Power of the Supreme Court of the United States

Former Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes once described the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) as “distinctly American in concept and function”. Few other courts in the world have the same authority to interpret the constitution, but none has exercised it for so long and with so much influence.

How does SCOTUS, the highest court of the United States, work? Why is it such an important factor in the political game? How does one become one of the nine justices, and why was the nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson considered a first?

And more important than ever: What does the possible overturning of Roe v. Wade mean?

David Goldfield, the Robert Lee Bailey Professor of History (University of North Carolina, Charlotte), will help us better understand the significance and uniqueness of SCOTUS. Ericka Bahner Seifried will moderate the discussion.
