We invite you to an exclusive reading from Jan Philipp Burgard's new book “Mensch, Amerika!”. The reading and conversation are moderated by David Patrician.
America is a powder keg; its social fault lines are explosive. The unrest after the death of George Floyd and the dramatic scenes surrounding the storming of the Capitol have shown this. Is America still the “land of unlimited opportunity”? Was it ever? Will the new president, Joe Biden, succeed in reconciling the country, or will it sink into a maelstrom of fear, violence and destruction? Jan Philipp Burgard goes where America's fractures become visible and, in gripping reportages, paints the picture of a country in a state of emergency.
Jan Philipp Burgard, born in 1985, is a journalist and member of the editorial management of the news channel WELT. He studied politics, modern history and public law in Bonn and Paris. After various positions, including at the ARD Tagesthemen, he was the ARD's USA correspondent from 2017 to 2021.
